The Case for a Tailor

The Case for a Tailor

The Case for a Tailor

By Adeline J. Wells

In this day and age, we as a society are so accustomed to having whatever we want right at our fingertips. From groceries to films to fashion, we are able to order whatever we desire right to our doorstep, and just as easily return or exchange whatever does not fit or serve our needs. However, the expansion of fast fashion has also made clothing seem dispensable in the eyes of many, leading to a disaster in terms of environmental waste.  It has also led to the gradual deterioration in the way we regard fashion as an art, curated by the likes of designers, seamstresses, and tailors.  It is in this vein that we argue the case for the gentlemen of today to find their own personal tailor; whether they are making emergency repairs or helping you find the perfect fit on a vintage piece, tailors are skilled members of the fashion world who can help take any look of yours to the next level.

Find the Perfect Fit

While we know that bodies come in all shapes and sizes, clothing that is off-the-rack rarely caters to this fact.  The majority of clothing sold in stores or online could be altered in some way, slight or significant, that would allow for it to better fit the wearer.  Examples could include taking a spot in to make it tighter, hemming the legs slightly, or loosening material in the shoulders for better movement. Having a quality tailor in your rolodex gives you the option to elevate your clothes to the perfect fit; the best version of them that will best fit you.

Emergencies

Everyone has experienced a last-minute wardrobe malfunction or emergency.  Whether it is popping a button, tearing a seam, or ripping a hole in your favorite pair of jeans, no one enjoys being down-and out related to a good outfit.  Having a tailor you trust makes impending emergencies a much less daunting occurrence.  Especially when they are known to work quickly and efficiently, your tailor will have you and your clothes back in the world in no time.

Invest in Your Community

As we increasingly outsource our shopping and repairs online, we often forget that there are people with honed, sought-after skills right in our own communities. Finding a personal tailor in your area is a way to invest in these trades that have been staples for centuries, but are increasingly becoming overlooked in the busy world of today.

Sustainability

In the era of fast fashion, it can be tempting to merely purchase something new that you know will fit, even though it may not be the most environmentally friendly option. Finding a personal tailor opens your wardrobe to the possibilities of pieces that have been worn, torn, but still have plenty of life left in them.  By utilizing someone you trust with the skills to change the fit of a timeless piece to best fit your frame, the world of gently used clothing and vintage clothing becomes open to you as well.  This makes for a cleaner environment for all, and better, much more stylish wardrobe for you.
